Classic 8-Day Congo (DRC) Itinerary: Kinshasa, Matadi & the Lower Congo River Corridor
Focusing on the western region and Kongo Central Province, this itinerary connects relatively manageable segments using the Congo River, river ports, and waterfalls, while deliberately avoiding conflict-prone eastern areas. Safety is always the top priority.
Itinerary Overview
Day 1–4: Kinshasa → Day 5: Matadi → Day 6: Inga Falls & the Lower Congo River → Day 7: Return to Kinshasa → Day 8: Departure. This route concentrates on the western Kongo Central Province, avoiding conflict zones in the east. Once again, please check the latest consular advisories before travel. Areas such as North Kivu, South Kivu, and Ituri in the east are not recommended at this time. Any off-the-beaten-path or remote travel should be conducted with a reliable team.
Days 1–4: Kinshasa – Riverside Metropolis
- Day 1: Arrive at N'Djili Airport in Kinshasa, complete entry procedures, and head to the city center to settle in and exchange currency. Take an evening stroll along the Congo River and view Brazzaville across the water.
- Day 2: Visit key urban landmarks and markets, experience Congolese rumba and soukous culture, and sample local dishes like fufu and cassava leaves to get a feel for the city’s rhythm and daily life.
- Day 3: Explore the National Museum and cultural institutions (confirm opening hours in advance), browse craft markets for wooden carvings and textiles, and soak up the cultural richness of Africa’s music capital.
- Day 4: Opt for a short trip outside the city or a Congo River cruise to learn about the hydrology and shipping value of the world’s deepest river, preparing for the westward journey the next day.
Day 5: Matadi – Gateway to the Congo River Estuary
Matadi is a major port city on the lower Congo River and a hub for rail and river transport. Visit the port and riverside scenery to witness the final stretch of the Congo River as it flows from the interior toward the sea through a dramatic gorge. For city travel, it is advisable to arrange vehicles and guides through local operators. Avoid venturing into unfamiliar areas alone, and do not take photos in sensitive locations such as the port without permission.
Day 6: Inga Falls & the Lower Congo River
Inga Falls, located on the lower Congo River, is a renowned site of high water volume and hydropower potential in Africa, featuring turbulent rapids and a powerful flow. Visits to this area must be arranged through official local providers under safe conditions. Do not enter engineering sites or hazardous riverbanks without authorization, and avoid approaching fast currents without a guide. Safety always comes before photography.
Days 7–8: Return & Departure
Return to Kinshasa to pack up, then depart via N'Djili Airport. Before leaving, confirm whether you are carrying cash within allowable limits, and allow ample time for airport formalities and possible traffic delays. Avoid last-minute transfers during nighttime due to time pressure.
Tips
- Road conditions for overland travel are poor; choose flights for intercity trips whenever possible, and prioritize safety assessments in your itinerary planning.
- Avoid nighttime driving throughout the trip. It is recommended to hire drivers and guides familiar with local conditions.
- Eastern ecological and volcanic sites are not included in this itinerary. Do not visit these areas until the security situation improves.
