How to get from the airport into town, how to ride the blue and yellow buses, and what to know about driving on the left — all your island transport questions answered in one guide.
Arrival and Airport Transfers
| Option | Time/Price | Details |
| Taxi | Approximately 30–40 minutes, around 35–50 Barbadian dollars | Takes you to hotels on the west or south coasts; fares are fixed by zone |
| Bus | Approximately 45–60 minutes, 2 Barbadian dollars | Requires a transfer in Bridgetown; not ideal if you have a lot of luggage |
| Hotel Transfer | Price varies by hotel | A good option for families and travelers arriving late at night |
Grantley Adams International Airport is about 13 kilometers from Bridgetown. Taxis use a zone-based pricing system based on your destination, and you can confirm the fare with the driver before getting in.
Buses and ZR Vans
- Blue Buses: Public buses operated by the transport authority; they are more regulated and safer, and routes can be checked online.
- Yellow Buses: Privately operated buses licensed by the government; same fare as blue buses but with more frequent service.
- ZR Vans: Private minibuses that are cheap but often crowded and drive fast; use with caution.
- Buses generally do not give change, so carry 2-dollar or 1-dollar coins; most services stop running in the evening.
Car Rental and Driving
- In Barbados, people drive on the left and cars have right-hand steering — the opposite of what many are used to, so it takes some getting used to.
- The legal driving age is 18, but most car rental companies require drivers to be at least 21 with some driving experience and to purchase a temporary license.
- Roads feature many roundabouts, where drivers entering must yield to those already in the circle. Watch out for pedestrians.
- Using a mobile phone while driving is prohibited and carries heavy fines; drunk driving is strictly forbidden.
Transport for Sea Activities and Island Exploration
- Catamaran cruises, turtle snorkeling, and deep-sea fishing usually depart from areas like Holetown and Carlisle Bay, and often include hotel pickup.
- Travel times between major beaches across the island are generally under 30 minutes; a private day tour is a great alternative if you’re not renting a car.
- For nighttime outings, it’s best to take a taxi and avoid walking through isolated areas.
