Transport Guide 2026-10-03 0 views
How to handle traffic jams in Luanda, how to fly to inland cities, how to reach Mount Leba Pass, how much a private car costs per day — this guide covers all the ins and outs of transportation in Angola and travel times for key routes.

Arrival and Airport Transfers

Most international flights arrive at Quatro de Fevereiro International Airport in Luanda. The new terminal is about 40 km from the city center. Negotiable taxi fares into town range from 15,000 to 30,000 kwanzas, or you can arrange a hotel transfer (recommended, especially at night). Domestic airports also operate in Benguela, Huambo, and Lubango.

How to Choose Your Inland Transport

  • Domestic Flights: TAAG Angola Airlines covers major routes such as Luanda–Malanje, Lubango, Namibe, and Benguela. Flights are in high demand and schedules can change, so book well in advance and allow buffer days.
  • Long-Distance Buses: Companies like Major and SGO operate routes such as Luanda–Huambo–Benguela. Vehicle conditions vary and travel times are long, making buses suitable only for budget-conscious travelers.
  • Rail: The Benguela Railway has been restored to the eastern border. There are passenger services between Luanda and Malanje, though punctuality is average and it’s more of an experience option.
  • Private Car Hire: The best option for in-depth inland travel. Prices including fuel and driver accommodation are around 100–180 USD per day. A 4WD vehicle is essential during the rainy season.

Urban Transportation

  • Taxis: Meters are not used. Always agree on a fare before getting in. In Luanda, prices for a one-way trip within the city range from 3,000 to 10,000 kwanzas depending on distance.
  • Ride-Hailing Apps: Yango is available in Luanda. It offers transparent pricing and relatively fast service, and is the preferred choice.
  • Candongueiro Minibuses: Local blue minibuses with fares of a few hundred kwanzas. Travel can be difficult during peak traffic hours, so they are not recommended if you’re in a hurry.
  • Self-Drive: Only recommended for those with African driving experience. Avoid driving at night and simply cooperate with police checkpoints by showing your documents.

Tips

  • Traffic congestion in Luanda is severe during morning and evening rush hours. Allow double the usual time when traveling between cities.
  • Gas stations are only found in towns. Fill up before long journeys and carry extra drinking water.
  • During the rainy season (November to April), dirt roads in inland areas may become impassable. Build in at least an extra day of flexibility to your itinerary.
