Classic 7-Day Angola Itinerary: Luanda — Kalandula Falls — Lubango Escarpment — Namib Edge
A central southern route: Luanda’s gulf capital, Kalandula’s mighty waterfall, the Tundavala Gap, and the Namib Desert coast — experience the best of Angola in one trip.
Itinerary Overview
D1-D2 Luanda → D3-D4 Malanje & Kalandula → D5 Return to Luanda, fly to Lubango → D6 Tundavala & Leba Pass → D7 Wrap up toward Namibe. Inland sections combine TAAG domestic flights and private transfers; those unfamiliar with road conditions should hire a local driver.
D1-D2 Luanda
- D1: Arrive at Quatro de Fevereiro Airport and rest. In the evening, stroll along the Marginal coastal boulevard to see colonial old town skyscrapers together, then dine on grilled grouper at a beachside food stall in Ilha do Cabo.
- D2: Morning at Fortaleza de São Miguel for gulf views, visit the Iron Palace and the Anthropology Museum; afternoon half-day trip toward Kissama National Park (optional), evening rooftop bar for Luanda nightlife.
D3-D4 Malanje Area: Black Rocks & Kalandula
- D3: Take an early flight to Malanje, then drive to the Black Rocks of Pungo Andongo — giant rock formations and Mbundu legends are worth an hour. Afternoon check-in at a hotel in Kalandula town.
- D4: Spend the day at Kalandula Falls on the Lucala River — during high water, a 400-meter-wide curtain of water cascades down three tiers. Walk the trail to viewpoints and bridges for photos, visit nearby village markets in the afternoon, then return to Malanje in the evening.
D5 Return to Luanda, Transfer to Lubango
Morning flight back to Luanda, then connect to Lubango. Arrive in the highland town in the evening — cool and dry — start with currency exchange and shopping for supplies in the city.
D6 Tundavala Gap & Leba Pass
Early morning to the Tundavala viewpoint, standing on the edge of a thousand-foot cliff to overlook the Atlantic-facing sea of clouds and gorges. Afternoon drive the hairpin-turn famous Leba Pass down to the Namibe side, with views of giant baobabs and Himba-style markets en route (mind photography etiquette).
D7 Namib Edge & Departure
Optional half-day at Namibe’s desert coast or Arco do Arco Oasis (4WD and guide required), evening depart via Namibe or return to Lubango for your international flight from Luanda.
Tips
- Domestic flight schedules often change; keep a half-day buffer before and after the itinerary.
- Malanje and Lubango private transfers are priced per day, including fuel at about $100–180/day.
- Waterfall trails can be slippery; wear non-slip shoes. Drones in waterfall areas may require prior approval.
